We’ve known about Box. Pizza for some time but as often happens in this business just hadn’t found the time to go. We recently rectified that mistake, and we will be going back.
The first impression we had was that, at first, it seems to be well hidden. On the road heading out of Beadnell towards Alnwick just before the turn for the coast road. Behind the hedges and trees it doesn’t immediately jump out at you even with the sign directing you to turn left. But once you do you are greeted with simplicity in a gorgeous setting. Box. is, as many restaurants seem to be these days, in a shipping container but don’t let that put you off. The inside is beautifully done with a small seating/dining area with the end wall all glass. This is where we sat, the reason being the aforementioned view. Looking over the fields, down to the coast with uninterrupted views this was perfect to enjoy our artisan pizzas.
The oven at Box.Pizza is in full view to the customers. This means you can, if you want to, watch your food being made from start to finish. The dough is all produced in house and the ingredients are local as far as is possible which is important. If you prefer your pizza to be boring then you want to eat elsewhere, a high street takeaway maybe. Box. provides flavours you may not expect on a pizza but not just for the sake of it. They aren’t just trying to be clever though, they’ve thought about their combinations and I decided to go for something different. Why would I not.
Amanda went for the Napolitana pizza and I decided on the Hot Duja. While maybe seeming to be in the “boring” department, even the Napolitana isn’t. The quality of the ingredients is what changes it with real flavour and no manmade plastic cheese. The Hot Duja pizza was something else, spicy but not too hot so you can’t actually taste it. The combination of the pancetta, salami and sriracha sauce making it full of flavour with a good bite to it.
For us Box. has everything we want from a pizza restaurant, Simplicity, quality and a view to sit and drink in while eating a pizza you won’t find anywhere else. We enjoyed it so much we are looking to book our works night out there. Even in the later months of the year it’s going to be stunning. Can’t wait.
